Namaste` Have a Great Yoga Day!!

9/11/08

We want to take this time to reflect on friends and families we may have lost on this day 7 years ago. Setting up an altar is a wonderful way to not only remember a lost loved one, but  it can become a location in your home or office that you can view to help meditate, relax and take a few minutes away from the hectic lives we lead in todays world. You may want to include a picture, a candle, a statue, flowers or plants, or something special to you. An altar does not have to take up alot of space, and can be in a corner or area of a room not being occupied. Blessings......

Affirmations for Children

AFFIRMATIONS FOR CHILDREN Children can learn affirmations from their toddler years all the way through their teen years. The results of using positive affirmations can improve a child's self esteem and confidence. It can reinforce honesty and compassion in your child. Examples of affirmations: I am strong I am peaceful I am confident I am compassionate I am kind I am thoughtful I am funny I am patient I am helpful I am smart I am talented I am good at _________ Namaste`, Have a Great Yoga Day!!

Being the perfect Yogi

Children's Yoga is a completely different animal then adult yoga. Adult Yoga focuses on being in proper ailignment, Children's Yoga introduces the child to the pose in a fun, age appropriate way. Adult Yoga teaches a series of poses to be done and repeated, children's yoga allows for the child to create a series of poses or recreate an existing pose. Adult Yoga focuses on breathing properly, children just breathe... Adult Yoga  is catergorized based on the style of yoga being taught , children's yoga introduces the child to many different styles of yoga. Parents need to realize that when children are learning a new skill, they learn through play. Being the perfect little yogi is not an option.

Being Thankful Activity

Teaching Children the value of giving thanks this season can be introduced at any age. Start by sitting down with your child in a quiet, clutter free space. The floor or any area will work. Ask the child to close their eyes with you and see if they can picture someone that they are thankful for knowing, meeting, learning from, being friends with, etc...

Boys and Yoga

Yoga for Boys is a wonderful opportunity to bring the history of yoga's beginnings into a class. Yoga was shared down through Monks, generation to generation, for the first 3 thousand years...Later when yoga became more mainstream, women and girls have since been introduced to it... Celebrate the history of only boys doing Yoga with Warrior Poses, Affirmations (positive statements),  and Strength poses like Chatturanga (Basically a push up as low as you can be to the ground not moving). Boys through yoga can work on flexibility, strength, balance, stamina and relaxation... Do they play Baseball? Football?Basketball? Wrestling? Do they ride bikes, rollerblades, skateboard? Do they play an instrument? Create art pieces? Write poems or stories? Yoga can help boys in all aspects of their life.. Namaste`, Have a Great Yoga Day!!

Back to School Tools

Back to School can be a stressful time for a child. They may have anxiety or nervousness about new teachers, new classrooms, or new schools. Breathing techniques and visualizations,(pictures in their minds) can help alleviate their stress during this time. If a child takes a bus or car ride to school, have them close their eyes for a few minutes and imagine breathing in peace and breathing out tension...breathing in happiness, breathing out sadness...breathing in new opportunities, breathing out the past...what else would they like to breathe in or breathe out? For very young students, have them imagine in their heads what their classroom will look like, feel like, friends they will make, fun things they will do.. Namaste`, Have a Great Back to School Day!!

ABC Breathing

Yoga breath for the week:   ABC breath: With the start of school it is a perfect time to use ABC breathing. Have your child inhale and on the exhale say "A", then inhale and the next exhale say "B", then inhale and exhale to "C" and continue as far as your child would like to go in the alphabet or knows the letters. Older children can do silently or even in an alternate language.

Breath for Breast Health

Yoga breath for breast health   Many of us remember Tarzan when he would beat his chest and call out "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh". In honor of all the women touched by breast cancer you can modify this by breathing in and when you breath out gently beat around your breasts. You can howl or call out like Tarzan did. "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh" Let's beat this disease....
